The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed H.E. Ambassador Jainaba Jagne of the Republic of The Gambia as the African Union Special Envoy for Children Affected by Armed Conflict (CAAC).
In line with the decisions of the AU Peace and Security Council, this appointment underscores the Commission’s commitment to advancing the continental Child Rights Agenda in conflict and post-conflict contexts, and to strengthening advocacy, coordination, and accountability in addressing the grave violations against children in Africa.
The Special Envoy will act as lead political advocate for the protection and promotion of the rights and welfare of children affected by armed conflict, working closely with all AU Member States, Organs, Regional Economic Communities / Mechanisms, civil society, and partners. She has reaffirmed her full commitment to the principles and objectives of the AU, particularly Africa’s Agenda for Children 2040: Fostering an Africa Fit for Children, and Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.
Ambassador Jagne brings extensive professional experience, a deep understanding of continental dynamics, and strong expertise in peace, security, and child welfare. She recently served as the Gambian Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the AU and was the Co-Chair of the Africa Platform on Children Affected by Armed Conflict (AP-CAAC). Her leadership is expected to significantly safeguard the rights and well-being of millions of African children in situations of conflict.
The AU Commission calls upon Member States, regional actors, and the international community to extend full support and cooperation to the Special Envoy in the effective discharge of this important mandate.
