A deadly, drug-resistant superbug is currently spreading across U.S. states.

A team of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco has discovered a terrifying mechanism behind the rise of Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungal superbug that has already infected thousands of Americans across 23 states this year.

Unlike typical skin fungi that the human body easily clears, C. auris physically retreats into hair follicles. Once nestled inside, the fungus manipulates the skin's immune response, essentially rewiring local defenses to remain undetected. This cellular stealth allows it to establish a persistent colony, waiting for its host’s immune system to weaken before invading the bloodstream and causing life-threatening infections.

Public health officials are increasingly alarmed as this resilient pathogen continues to bypass standard clinical defenses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has designated C. auris an urgent antimicrobial threat, with some strains entirely impervious to all existing antifungal medications.

While the general public remains at a relatively low risk of severe illness, the superbug poses an extraordinary danger to hospitalized and immunocompromised patients, boasting a mortality rate that can reach up to 60 percent. Understanding how the fungus colonizes the skin represents a vital breakthrough, but scientists warn that swift infection-control measures are urgently needed to halt its silent spread through healthcare facilities.

BREAKING NEWS: Umabot na sa spilling level na 80.17 meters ang La Mesa Dam sa Quezon City dahil sa patuloy na pag-ulan, ayon sa 5:37 PM update ng PAGASA ngayong Lunes, August 10.

Ang sobrang tubig mula sa dam ay inaasahang makakaapekto sa mga mabababang lugar at barangay sa Tullahan River, mula Quezon City, Valenzuela City, Caloocan City, Malabon City at Navotas.
