Personal update: I'm still looking for a job 🤣
Most of the inquiries I've gotten were for marketoor or investoor
That's probably what I end up doing but lately I've been looking to run the show
In business school I was always drawn to the cases around taking over from a founder to get to the next level.
If that's interesting, get in touch
OpenSea has evolved.
Beta complete. Full token universe unlocked.
New rewards program live. Welcome to the new OpenSea — the best place to discover, own, and trade anything onchain.
IDEA: Community rollup
PROBLEM: The Ethereum community believes in rollups, but no individual rollup has gotten the buy-in of the Ethereum community.
It's not obvious where to deploy if you're a founder and no specific rollup effectively promotes you even if you deploy there.
The rollup tokens are all *down only* as VCs relentlessly dump their tokens. (You can literally look at one major rollup and see the large red candle on the first day of every month 👀)
SOLUTION:
1. Give out the community rollup's token in the genesis block to everyone who holds ETH.
If you hold 100 ETH, you get 100 community rollup tokens. Exact same supply as ETH to start with.
No tax liability means no intrinsic sell pressure.
If you hold ETH, you have the same stake in this community rollup as you have in ETH.
2. Direct sequencer fees to buy the community token onchain.
Native and constant buy pressure with every block.
3. Find influencers who will promote apps on the community rollup.
Revocable Sablier streams assure that they promote apps.
If you deploy on community rollup, not only does the entire ETH community have a direct stake in your success, but you are guaranteed a level of marketing that no other chain has.
HOW DO I MAKE MONEY, EVAN?
Two ways
1. Take the allocation of all ETH that has been hacked (don't give any tokens to North Korea, that's yours). Also take frozen ETH (eg, the Polkadot ICO), etc.
2. Sequencer fees. Assume 50% of sequencer fees go to buy the token in an AMM onchain, in a successful rollup, this will still be millions of dollars a month that can go into ensuring that community rollup is THE place to deploy. Strong focus on devrel and BD. Become the Ethereum BD team that we so desperately need.
WHY WOULDN'T THIS WORK?
1. No airdrop hunters.
Lots of the users on Base are hunting an airdrop (which may never come). There won't be an airdrop here. You just care because you got the tokens based on your ETH.
2. No liquidity incentives.
Giving out the token in the genesis block means there's no incentives to bring liquidity.
3. XKCD cartoon about standards.
Community doesn't care about having a token. Team isn't legit enough and/or community rollup isn't seen as a long-term project. You need to recruit the right team to show that you'll be a leading tech in the long-term.
(personally I think it's guaranteed to work if you execute well)
WHAT TECH STACK WOULD YOU USE?
tbh I don't really think it matters. There are multiple stacks that are adequate. Blockspace is a commodity.
What matters is execution and getting the ETH community to care.
ISN'T HAVING NO TOKEN BETTER?
Lol, no. If anything should intrinsically have a token, it's a chain.
A direct financial incentive via token is fundamental.
I have more ideas around this, DM if you're interested.
What Infinex is doing with Yaprun is worth watching
tbh I find most of the Kaito yap campaigns to be cringe at best. I attempt to curate my Twitter stream for high signal so I don't see much of it, but the few things that reach me is just so obviously terrible that it makes me feel negative about the chains paying to have people shill them.
A wallet is all about distribution. Infinex is doing it smartly.
Many wallets in the past wanted me to do some kind of affiliate link in @WeekInEthNews and I always just laughed. Sure, being in there will drive some signups, but it's all the indirect exposure that will be most valuable, and none of them were capable of even beginning to understand that. [Insert rant about how bad the marketing directors are in this space.]
Yaprun does a better job than most of recognizing that indirect exposure.
But in reality that's how most people sign up for things: you hear about it here and there and then eventually go sign up. For awhile the trendy thing in marketing was the Seven Touch principle for getting someone to sign up (ie, you need 7 positive touches on average to buy something)
Infinex basically takes all its signups and attributes half of them to referral codes and half to the people tweeting about it.
Daily is probably too short of a timeframe, as the Twitter algo doesn't even start recycling successful tweets for a bunch of hours. But at least it's a recognition that not everything is a referral code or tracking cookie.
Anyway, this is basic marketing stuff but I've rarely seen anyone in crypto understand this. So bullish Infinex
If I were an app founder, I would make certain that my app was in the Infinex app store when it launches in the next few weeks
KYC is simple.
You send your data indirectly to criminals in the dark web to spam you, steal your identity, hack your bank account, and any other nefarious purpose they can think of.
Honestly think @infinex_app will be the #1 Ethereum wallet faster than you think
Infinex Connect is going to make it so you don't need to use a browser extension anymore (tbh I have always considered all browser extensions to be security holes)
Key management options are spectacular and intuitive and provide a great UX and onboarding
Swidge is pretty magical for swapping and bridging
And every day I login and play Bullrun (poorly). Not sure if 21,963 points is a lot - there should be a leaderboard
"but Evan, what chain should I deploy on?" is the question I hear most frequently when I talk to founders
These days, most of them lean toward Base because that's the only rollup in Ethereum which promotes you (but Base does less of this now, and requires lots of talking to lawyers). Also some leave for centralized chains because if they deploy there, those chains will promote them
"Return to mainnet" is what I usually say these days
Yes, gas could go back up, but increases in gaslimit are coming, so actually it makes sense to deploy to mainnet right now for almost every app
None of the rollups except Base (for a while) figured out that marketing and promotion are what builders are looking for. They don't care about your tech. They care about where they can be successful
Return to mainnet and at least the Ethereum community has a direct reason to care about and promote you
It's actually the opposite
This is a screenshot from a tweet from a rollup founder.
Rollups need to stop thinking that their tech differentiates them.
None of your tech is 10x your competitors, sorry. None of you. Not even close. We're talking percentage differences, not magnitudes. None of you are even trustless yet.
Ethereum doesn't have a BD team. Which means that we have 42 BD rollup teams that go talk to institutions and governments, and none close the sale because they all muddle each other's messages. The whole process sours some institutions on Ethereum even when ETH is obviously the best choice for them.
Startups and tech generally have traditionally underrated marketing. "The product should sell itself."
Ethereum is even worse about this. Vitalik is culpable for overrating tech and tinkering with the protocol rather than doing the hard work of figuring out distribution.
Ethereum needs to focus on winning. Real apps for real users.
In just the last 24 hours, gold market cap has gone up about $500 billion
More than 2.5x the entire market cap of ETH
ZOOM OUT: money and store of value will all be electronic in the long run as technology continues to eat the world
ETH has better stock to flow than gold
You're still early
