After Megalopolis, I headed to Pallantion, an ancient town in Arcadia founded, according to the myth, by Pallas, one of the sons of Lykaon. It was of particular importance in later antiquity because of the mythical connection with Ancient Rome, for the Romans believed that Evander set out from there to settle the Palatine in Rome sixty years before the Trojan War. Among the ruins is the sanctuary dedicated to the Pure Gods mentioned by Pausanias (8.44.5).

Pallantium took part in the foundation of Megalopolis, 371 BCE. The city was restored and enlarged by Antoninus Pius, who conferred upon it freedom from taxation and other privileges, on account of its reputed connection with Rome.

This morning, exploring Megalopolis. The site has the remains of impressive buildings, including a theatre, the remains of the Thersilion, the meeting place of the Arcadian primary assembly (the so-called Ten Thousand), a massive stoa, the temple of Zeus Soter and a bouleutetion.

The theatre (currently under restoration and closed to the public until 2027) had a capacity of 20,000 visitors and originally 50 rows of seats, making it one of the largest ancient Greek theatres. It dates from soon after 370 BC.
