Honestly, Coach Hugo Broos thought he was playing Amapiano, not soccer, because he totally got everything wrong last night.

I am saying this as a Bafana Bafana supporter who really wanted us to start this World Cup with belief, courage, and a proper plan. But from the first whistle, I was asking myself what exactly we were trying to do.

This was not a friendly.

This was not a PSL weekend where you test ideas like you are preparing for Kaizer Chiefs. This was Mexico, in Mexico, in the opening game of the World Cup. That kind of stage needs your sharpest tactics, your bravest selection, and players who can actually make the opposition uncomfortable.

But we started with five defenders, no natural wingers, and no real attacking midfielder connecting the midfield to the two strikers.

So my question is simple:

How were Iqraam Rayners and Lyle Foster supposed to hurt Mexico if nobody was feeding them properly?

You cannot expect strikers to create miracles from long balls, pressure, and hope. At this level, you need a bridge. You need someone who can receive the ball between the lines, turn, carry it forward, and make defenders panic.

That is why I kept thinking about Relebohile Mofokeng.

This was exactly the kind of game where Mofokeng could have changed the mood. Not because he is magic, but because he plays with bravery. He asks questions. He carries the ball. He has that street-football confidence that can disturb a comfortable defence.

Instead, he sat on the bench while Bafana looked disconnected.

The first half already showed the problem. Mexico were not impossible to play against, but they were comfortable because we did not stretch them. There was no width, no surprise, no real rhythm going forward.

Then Sithole gets the red card, and the game becomes even harder.

But even at that point, I still felt Broos had a chance to be brave. Bring Mofokeng. Let him operate behind Rayners and Foster. Give Mexico something different to worry about.

Instead, we became even more passive, and later Themba Zwane also got sent off. After that, the match was basically gone.

The painful part is not just that we lost.

The painful part is that I honestly believe Mexico were beatable.

But Bafana made the game harder for themselves with the setup, the lack of attacking balance, and the slow reaction from the bench. You cannot go to a World Cup opener with fear in your tactics and expect confidence from the players.

At this level, every decision matters.

The starting line-up matters.
The shape matters.
The timing of substitutions matters.
The courage to change the game matters.
Last night, Hugo Broos was outcoached.
And if Bafana want to survive this group, the next game cannot be approached like we are trying not to lose.
We need players who can play forward.
We need creativity.
We need width.
We need someone brave enough to carry the ball.
We need a plan that says, “We are here to compete,” not just “We are here to survive.”

Because at the World Cup, mistakes are expensive.

And last night, Broos paid cash.
