@susankotch I love that you take the time for this, so important. This reminds me of comments on report cards, I use to see one for each subject for my kids in early years and now I hardly see any at all ๐ฅด. I would love to see more than a number. #sunchat
I think the kids truly care, but once they get to a point with poor grades they canโt โseeโ a way back up. Our elementary school doesnโt give grades below 60, that way one or two โbadโ grades wonโt make the kids feel like they canโt bounce back. #sunchat
Are kids not caring because parents aren't caring? Do colleges care? Is it something that isn't as important any more as a society/culture? Because if so, why are we still giving numeric "grades"? #sunchat
@MrsPazMPS We give them to our students after 5th. I would love to see a transition to middle school instead. Itโs always great to see a visual reminder of how far youโve come, especially for kids #sunchat
I work at an IB elementary school and we have portfolios that follow the kids K4- 5th grade. They love seeing their progress each year. We also have student-led@conferences for parents. The kids prepare their presentations and the teacher is only there for help. #sunchat
@thnorfar @CarlaMeyrink @Chad_mLang @HillMrispo I love the idea of portfolios... To be honest I went to a college that boasted their teaching program as the best in the state... Did that help me get an immediate job that they promised when I graduated? Absolutely not... #sunchat
@LeslieTeaches This brings up an interesting question also as should we be resetting the grading scale... 0-60 is an F but the other letter grades are ten point gaps? Is it something we should look into as an educational institution? #sunchat ๐ค๐ค
I feel like it always come back to the $ that this is where the biggest concerns are, through no fault of the educators. The early years are so important for building confidence in children and young adults and unfortunately grades can have a huge impact on that #sunchat
Will standards-based grading (meeting, progressing, exceeding...) fix that challenge? What does that mean for a school district with a platform that doesn't support that? $$$$$. Will parents support that change. #sunchat
@susankotch as an educator and mom of a 13 and 10 year old I see grades doing the opposite of motivation more and more. I would to see more focus on fostering a childโs true interests and encouraging more risk taking and use of imagination, especially with our older kids.
OK let's get started! So... grades... hmmmm... I have kids who aren't "grade motivated". First of all, I'm finding it's more common now. Out comes my bag of tricks... #sunchat
Good morning Sunchat! Iโm Leslie, a 4k assistant, former media center assistant from Spartanburg, SC. Iโm also a senior @ConverseUniv in early childhood ๐ค #sunchat

@MrsPazMPS I love the momentum and excitement of the new school year, I would love to see ideas and suggestions on ways to keep that going throughout the year ๐ ๐ค #sunchat
