Haiti 🇭🇹 declared its independence from France, January 1, 1804.

In 1823 France 🇫🇷 made Haiti pay back 150 million Francs . It took an entire century for Haiti to finally be free. That’s 14 billion dollars in today’s money .

The United States 🇺🇸 worked to isolate a newly independent Haiti during the early 19th century and violently occupied the island nation for 19 years in the early 20th century. While the U.S. officially left Haiti in 1934, it continued to control Haiti's public finances until 1947, siphoning away around 40% of Haiti's national income to service debt repayments to the U.S. and France.

Much of this debt to France was the legacy of what the University of Virginia scholar Marlene Daut calls "the greatest heist in history": surrounded by French gunboats, a newly independent Haiti was forced to pay its slaveholders reparations. You read that correctly. It was the former slaves of Haiti, not the French slaveholders, who were forced to pay reparations. Haitians compensated their oppressors and their oppressors' descendants for the privilege of being free. It took Haiti more than a century to pay the reparation debts off.

Police knocked on the wrong door in the middle of the night at the Mississippi home of Ismael Lopez.

When he opened the door, his dog ran out.

They shot and killed it.

He was holding a rifle. They told him to put it down.

He turned around to put it down and they shot him in the back of the head and killed him.

The officer was not prosecuted.

And today a Mississippi jury rejected his wife's civil suit, stating that they did not feel the officer used "excessive force."

Street vendor selling mummies in Egypt, 1865 .

During the Victorian era of the 1800s, Napoleon’s conquest of Egypt threw open the Gates of Egypt’s history for the Europeans. At that time, mummies were not accorded the respect that they deserved from the European elites and in fact, mummies could be purchased from street vendors (as shown in the picture) to be used as the main event for parties and social gatherings that took place in the 18th century.

The elites of the era would often hold “Mummy Unwrapping Parties”, which, as the name suggests, had the main theme in which a Mummy would be unwrapped in front of a boisterous audience, cheering and applauding at the same time.

During that period of time, the well-preserved remains of ancient Egyptians were routinely ground into a powder and consumed as a medicinal remedy. Indeed, so popular was pulverized mummy that it even instigated a counterfeit trade to meet demand, in which the flesh of beggars was passed off as that of ancient mummified Egyptians.

As the Industrial Revolution progressed, so Egyptian mummies were exploited for more utilitarian purposes: huge numbers of human and animal mummies were ground up and shipped to Britain and Germany for use as fertilizer.

Others were used to create mummy brown pigment or were stripped of their wrappings, which were subsequently exported to the US for use in the paper-making industry. The author Mark Twain even reported that mummies were burnt in Egypt as locomotive fuel.

As the nineteenth century advanced, mummies became prized objects of display, and scores of them were purchased by wealthy European and American private collectors as tourist souvenirs. For those who could not afford a whole mummy, disarticulated remains – such as a head, hand, or foot – could be purchased on the black market and smuggled back home.

Around the 12th Century, Europeans had been eating Egyptian mummies as medicine.

The mummified remains of many of the Black indigenous Kemetyu were eaten by Europeans because they believed it could give them both healing and enhanced powers.

Many of the black mummies were an ingredient used in medicine in Europe,mummies remains were ground into powder and consumed with chocolate or alcohol.

This practice continued well into the early 20th century, with the last documented sale of "medical mummy powder" in 1908.
