@JasonJAnger The value one has for reading is deeply personal. The goals of literacy instruction should depend on the context of the instruction and the desires/interests/abilities of the unique individuals being instructed.
What we would prefer for our kids is often made irrelevant by them.
@alexklinger@thinbluesublime@AndyMasley I like him because he explicitly asks for experts to challenge his conclusions & he's clear that there are serious issues with data centers, including energy and noise.
He very clearly describes local water use. And this is starting to feel like a disagreement w/ an anti-vaxxer.
@alexklinger@thinbluesublime@AndyMasley If you can resist the urge to focus on who's paying him to be so bad at propaganda, there are a variety of objective facts here that clearly demonstrate that "data centers don't stress water supplies locally or regionally."

Two responses to this:
1) I wonder if he includes the Romans welcoming a multitude of immigrants from all over to form their city (Liv. 1.7.5-6) or Camillus' impassioned speech about Roman citizenship expansion (Liv. 8.13.10-18).
@alexklinger@AndyMasley Ignoring completely the truthfulness (or lack thereof) to focus on purely hypothetical incentives isn't necessarily a "dirty rhetorical trick," but is an obvious evasion of the most important points being made. They're either true or they're not.
@alexklinger@AndyMasley What it is mostly is an avoidance of the actual arguments being made in order to focus on assertions of motivation. It's not a good way to get to the facts of a particular matter and is often a sign that there is no good counter-argument at hand.
@HasanIQtest@DefectingGrey@simonmaechling@rabbitholebot I don't tend to study medicine before seeing my doctor, or the latest auto engine design before seeing my mechanic, or construction before hiring contractors.
I think it's reasonable to trust in expertise & how it evolves & improves in specific areas, so that's what I do.
@ItsLulu_7 I think a journalist & researcher could gain followers & trust by admitting that you were mistaken, here. Learning through mistakes is very valuable! Of course, not admitting mistakes makes it reasonable to ignore your journalism & research, so I hope you do the right thing.
@kepl4r The good news is that after nearly 20 years and millions of vapers, there are no cases of people being harmed by regulated nicotine vapes. Millions of former smokers have improved their health by switching. What you reposted is completely false & can keep smokers from switching.
@itsLord_za Fewer youths are using nicotine than ever before. Vaping is mostly used by adults, who would otherwise be smoking. Millions of people have vaped nicotine for nearly 20 years w/ no evidence of harm. Absent burned tobacco, nicotine is about as dependence-forming as caffeine.
@howonearthcait@JoshPhillipsPhD It's definitely something that happens, but do you have data to support your "70%+ of the time" assertion? I know lots of homeschooling families, all with happy, thriving kids.
@BLeBlan68656830@CaitlinPacific There are a wide variety of methods to prevent kids from touching hot surfaces and teaching them how to be careful around hot surfaces that don't involve hitting kids. Crazy, right?
