“In just about a month, the 5th year of the full-scale invasion will begin. And the 13th year of the war waged by the nuclear terrorist empire & its Axis of Evil against us, a peace-loving, non-nuclear country with a small economy and a disproportionately limited military-industrial complex.

For 13 years, the empire has been killing our best people - those who, with their own bodies, are holding back all the legions of the evil horde from the north.

For 13 years, they have been trying to burn down our entire home, drag us into slavery, or drive us out into the world.
And for thirteen years, we stand.

Thank one another in the midst of yet another of our harsh wartime winters.

Just walk up, hug, and say thank you. To everyone who has joined the defense. To everyone who, having burned out thousands of times, continues to honestly keep going and doing their job.

Because right now we often don’t even fully realize the scale of the feat we are performing - for our loved ones & the world.”

On July 28, Ukraine honours the memory of defenders and civilians who were executed, tortured, or died in Russian captivity.

On the night of July 28–29, 2022, Russia killed more than 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war and injured more than 130 others in the Olenivka prison, where Russia held civilians and servicepeople, including defenders of Mariupol and the Azovstal steel plant.

In the days preceding the explosions, some prisoners had been transferred to a separate building. Wounded were left without adequate medical assistance for hours. These circumstances point to a deliberately prepared crime. Russia has since refused independent international access to the site.

Olenivka was not an isolated crime. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission, 96% of released Ukrainian POWs reported torture or ill-treatment in Russian captivity. Every day in Russian captivity carries the risk of irreversible harm or death.

The immediate return of all Ukrainian prisoners of war and illegally detained civilians is imperative, especially those who are seriously wounded, critically ill, or require urgent medical care.

If your definition of anti-colonialism stops where Russian expansionism begins, you are not opposing imperialism. You are just hating the West.

Anti-colonialists should not give Moscow a free pass, but far too many do. Because Russia built its empire across land borders rather than oceans, millions of people ignore one of the most brutal colonial projects in world history.

Selective anti-colonialism is one of the greatest intellectual failures of modern political debate. Too many commentators remain blind to Russian imperialism, treating colonialism as if it were strictly a Western enterprise carried out against the Global South.

Why does this double standard exist?

First, it is a hangover from the Cold War, when Western leftists idealized the USSR as an anti-capitalist counterweight, ignoring its imperial subjugation of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Second, modern "campism" leads people to believe that the enemy of the West must be a friend of liberation. This reflexive anti-Americanism causes observers to deliberately ignore Russian and Chinese aggression. Finally, Moscow actively fuels this blindness by funding populist movements on both the far left and far right, buying political silence and echoing anti-Western rhetoric.

The historical facts of Russian colonialism are undeniable. Moscow built its empire through land conquest, robbing neighboring republics of their resources, deporting indigenous populations, and murdering millions through manufactured starvations like the Holodomor (and in other ways too). Non-Russian cultures were systematically suppressed through forced Russification and political purges.

That same colonial impulse drives Russia today. In Ukraine, Moscow is attempting a classic war of colonial re-conquest, stealing land and attempting to erase local identity. In Africa, Russia uses mercenaries and political interference to extract mineral wealth and prop up autocratic regimes, wrapping its neo-colonial resource grab in anti-Western slogans.

If your anti-imperialism ignores Russian colonialism, it is not anti-imperialism at all. It is merely partisan bias.
