First Newsom’s backers call the electoral process a coup and now special interests are trying to overturn Prop. 22. Is there anyone subject to more abuse than the California voter?
On Monday a court rebuked our imperious Governor. On Tuesday the people of California rebuked our wayward Legislature, overriding the most corrupt law it's ever passed. This is just the beginning - stay and fight!
Do I love that the ridesharing initiative (Prop. 22) is massively funded by a few companies? No. But a lot more money was spent buying the Legislature and Governor who made the initiative necessary.
The initiative to keep Uber and Lyft in California (Prop. 22) now has bipartisan backing in the Legislature. If it passes, support for the remnants of #AB5 could quickly collapse.
#AB5stories, Lynn: "I'm a transcriptionist. I work from home and love it. I'm not able to work outside the home now and wouldn't want to. I choose what work I want and when to work. After #AB5, the companies I work with had to cut off their CA workers. We lost our livelihood."
#AB5stories, Danielle: "I just lost my main source of income because they didn’t want to make me an employee to follow #AB5. My other side jobs I use to sustain myself are freelance gigs that are on my own accord and I enjoy. This law will cause me to lose my home."
#AB5stories, Marsha: "I lost my job of 12 years as a medical transcriptionist because of #AB5. Many in this profession value the flexibility in hours and working from home more than employee status. Now I have no money at all."
Before #AB5 we had the ability to craft our work around our children. We enjoyed this flexibility; AB5 destroyed it. If "this is a growing concern", @LorenaAD80 would never have passed a law that hinders mothers, especially single mothers. #hypocrite#RepealAB5#LorenaHatesMoms
#AB5stories, Susan: "I've worked as a court reporter since 1992. #AB5 has upended my career. I WANT to be independent. I can work with up to 30 agencies a year. Some I only work with once. I want to set my own hours, what depositions I choose to report, where I choose to work."
#AB5stories, Marina: "I'm a certified court interpreter. I've been very happily freelancing for 15 years. I can choose which agencies to work with, and work as much or as little as I want to spend time with my 3-year-old. #AB5 is destroying my wonderful work/life combo."
"That's what the money is for, specifically—to go after small businesses and independent contractors at a time when they're struggling more than they ever have before," Kiley told the Washington Free Beacon. #AB5

This quote from an #AB5 witness could be inscribed on the dome of our State Capitol: "These unions controlled my testimonies, got stories out of me, and then tossed me out. It was payday for them, not to help domestic workers."
Governor Newsom's #AB5 denialism ("I'm not sure those jobs were killed") becomes even more preposterous as each new jobs report shows us worse off than almost every state.
#AB5stories, Marion: "I'm a freelance translator and have clients who suspended all working relationships with California translators because of #AB5. Add COVID-19 and my income is down nearly 60% from last year. Repealing AB5 would take at least one of these strains away."
Gov. Newsom is celebrating the Supreme Court decision on LGBT workplace protections. Yet when LA Blade told him about a loss of work in the LGBT community from #AB5, he dismissed their plight. For this Governor, social justice ends where the influence of special interests begins.
