“Everyone prayed that they would just kill us.”

15 months in russian captivity.

Olenivka. Horlivka. Torture. And finally, home.

Oleksandr Didur was captured unconscious after being severely wounded defending Mariupol.

His hands did not work. He could not see. He could only hear Chechens nearby.

One touched his head with a pistol.

Another said: “Don’t touch him. He’ll be dead soon.”

He survived.

Before the full-scale invasion, Oleksandr had already served for years — first on a submarine in Sevastopol, then with the Ukrainian Marines.

In Donetsk region, he was wounded by a 120mm mortar round. After a year of recovery, he returned to the 36th Marine Brigade.

In February 2022, he was defending Mariupol near Pavlopil.

His unit held the Illich Iron and Steel Works while ammunition, food and water were running out.

During one battle, a russian tank turned its turret directly toward him.

He barely jumped away from the window.

A fellow soldier pulled him into the bunker. Because of his wounds, Oleksandr was mistakenly declared dead.

A surgeon with almost no equipment or medicine performed an operation that saved his life.

Then came captivity.

For a month, he could not even stand on his own. Fellow prisoners lifted him, fed him and put him back down.

A catheter that should have been changed several times a week was left in place for almost a month.

Then Olenivka.

No medical care.

Prisoners were beaten with fists and boots. Shocked on the genitals. Held under water. Tied in painful positions for hours.

“Everyone prayed that they would just kill us, so it would finally end.”

On July 29, 2022, russia murdered around 53 Ukrainian prisoners in Olenivka.

Oleksandr survived and was transferred to Horlivka.

On July 6, 2023, after 15 months in captivity, he and 44 other Ukrainian prisoners finally came home.

They did not shout “Slava Ukraini!”

They were afraid.

They thought it could be another trap.

Then they realized they were truly free.

“The air here is different. Free. It doesn’t squeeze you. It’s like I finally took off the chains I had been dragging for years.”

And while Oleksandr was defending Mariupol, his wife was giving birth to their son in a bunker in Mykolaiv under shelling.

His commander showed him a photo of his wife and newborn son and let him make a phone call.

Oleksandr returned to his men and simply cried.

He survived.

He came home.

But hundreds of Ukrainian prisoners are still there.

Yurii Hlodan was identified at the front only by his cross.

His wife Valeriia, their three-month-old daughter Kira, and grandmother Liudmyla were killed by a russian missile in Odesa on Easter Sunday in 2022.

Yurii was left alone. He went on to defend Ukraine.

On September 12, 2023, he was killed.

Today marks three years since his death.

russia destroyed an entire family.

Yurii. Valeriia. Kira. Liudmyla.

They lived. They loved. They dreamed.

Today, Russia produces 140 ballistic missiles per month. According to NATO standards, to down 140 missiles you use 280 anti-ballistic interceptors. The ratio is one to two. But you will never get 280 Patriot missiles per month. Even getting 100 missiles is a huge challenge.

And this is what I want – to have 100–120 interceptors for the difficult, cold months ahead. We could get them from the U.S., either from stocks or production lines. There is political will in the U.S. to help and sell the interceptors, but production is not that high for now. That means existing stocks are an option. Will the Americans be ready to give us something from stocks? I don’t know. We will see.

Countries in the Middle East – we are in dialogue with them too. As well as some package – not particularly large – from the Europeans. And with all due respect to the Europeans, they have helped a lot and we appreciate that, they should share these missiles to help save lives.

Our cities and communities have been under almost constant attack since last night. In Odesa, rescue and search operations are continuing at the site of an apartment building damaged by a Russian missile. Thirty-seven people have been injured. The search for two more people who are still missing continues nonstop. All necessary emergency services are on the scene. This morning, the Russians struck a hotel in Chornomorsk, in the Odesa region, with a drone. Eleven people were injured, including six with limited mobility. In the Zaporizhzhia region, two people were killed when a “shahed” struck residential buildings. Six people were injured. There were also casualties following a strike on an enterprise in Zaporizhzhia. In Kryvyi Rih, a missile struck critical infrastructure. Three people were injured, and one person was killed. My condolences to all the families and loved ones of the victims. Two more people were injured in the Kyiv region. Ten regions came under Russian attack last night, and Russian attack drones are still flying over many of them. Once again, the Russians struck ordinary gas stations in the Zhytomyr and Rivne regions, as well as a locomotive depot in the Odesa region.

Our defenders have shot down more than 200 aerial targets since the beginning of this day alone, but unfortunately, not all of them. And when the Russians so blatantly turn ordinary people into targets of their terrorist attacks, it is frustrating that the response from the world’s strongest powers does not match the level of Russia’s escalation. A matching response that truly has a chance of stopping the killings and protecting people is always a joint one. I am grateful to everyone who is helping Ukraine with anti-ballistic defense. To everyone who is making the pressure on Russia felt. And to everyone who is helping Ukrainians, wherever they may be.

Today is an important day – a day of strong people, and at the same time, a deeply tragic one. Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, people were attacked. A terrible attack, a tragedy in the United States. Nearly 3,000 people from 90 countries around the world were killed, including Ukrainians. We honor all the heroes who did everything they could that day to save the lives of others – police officers and firefighters, and simply caring people, including those of Ukrainian descent. At that time, NATO showed its strength. And it is very important that there was a response to terrorism and that Article 5 was invoked. This shows that if people want to preserve their civilization and their choice to defend their rights, freedoms, and values, there must be a response to any enemy or terrorist. Today in our city of Pavlohrad, the Russians killed people with drones who were simply near shopping malls. As of now, four people have been reported killed… My condolences to their families and loved ones. More than 60 people were wounded in this strike alone. Everyone is receiving the necessary assistance. Dozens of people were also wounded in Kramatorsk by Russian bombs that struck residential buildings. Ця ніч була жорсткою і болючою для Києва. Росія била ракетами та дронами по сплячих мешканцях, складах, школі й телеканалу. Атака триває і весь день. In Kyiv and the region, as well as in many other regions, efforts to deal with the aftermath of the Russian strike have been underway since last night. It was a complex attack that the Russians tried to plan to cause as much harm to life as possible – ballistic missiles, cruise and anti-ship missiles, and jet-powered “shaheds.” There is significant damage to residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure in the capital. As of now, ten people are known to have been injured. Everyone who needs medical assistance is receiving it. State Emergency Service personnel managed to rescue thirteen people. Tragically, two people were killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones.

In the Kyiv region, critical infrastructure was struck. In the Odesa region – an ordinary market. Two people were injured in Kharkiv. An apartment building was damaged. In the morning, the locomotive of the Kyiv–Sumy train was attacked at a railway station in the Sumy region. Fortunately, no one was injured. Evacuation is underway. Zaporizhzhia and the Dnipro region were also targeted.

Overall, our warriors downed 175 aerial targets overnight, but unfortunately, not all of them. Despite very good results against cruise missiles, ballistic missiles remain particularly difficult to intercept, and every day we make the case to our partners for our need for interceptors. We have already discussed this with the Americans and Europeans, and there will be more meetings, including today, with representatives of countries and companies that can help with supplies and with our anti-ballistic system – FREYJA. I thank all our partners who make support for Ukraine’s air defense a priority. This directly means saving lives.
