Further to Blair. Literally every honest sensible person in all the main parties privately agrees with all these propositions:

- welfare spending is too high and is throwing good people on the scrapheap
- defence spending is too low
- the triple lock is unsustainable
- without cheap energy we cannot exploit the AI revolution
- we should be investing in EVERY form of energy: renewables, nuclear and the North Sea
- migration needs to be controlled to boost social cohesion and because the boats look like a huge failure of the state
- any new relationship with the EU will be imposed on us until we are stronger and cannot involve the closeness some desire without freedom of movement
- we are deeply embedded with America in ways which the public does not understand and cannot be told and however joyous it makes us feel to hate Trump, disengagement at the deep state level is not only wholly unrealistic but also undesirable
- Whitehall needs a total overhaul so specific project expertise and political appointees can be brought in quickly

Blair basically says all that.

The one thing he doesn’t say and which the same group of people agree on is this and it’s something Blair left behind:

- judges and quangos have too much power, are unaccountable and without redressing the balance in favour of parliament it is very difficult to do anything big fast
- the bare minimum that needs to change in this regard is to reform judicial review and planning law so we can put building and economic growth ahead of newts and NIMBYs

None of that above really ought to be up for discussion. It is all common sense but not one of our politicians will publicly say all of it

Whatever you think of Blair, engage with what he’s saying not how he makes you feel. The bare minimum we should expect from any leader is that they have an analysis of the current situation and a plan to deal with it which is as coherent and realistic as his intervention. Pretty well every critique I’ve read so far has failed to meet this requirement.

I’m a huge Tesla fan and deeply invested in the ecosystem here in the UK: Solar, 3 Powerwalls, Tesla Model 3.

The hardware is brilliant. But honestly, the Powerwall optimisation software is surprisingly primitive for such an advanced system.

My setup routinely exports far too much solar/battery energy back to the grid during the middle of the day, then forces me to buy expensive electricity late in the evening before my cheap overnight tariff kicks in again.

The frustrating part is that the system already HAS all the information needed to behave intelligently:

historic household demand
solar production patterns
local weather forecasts
battery state
import/export tariffs
grid conditions
EV charging behaviour

Yet many of us still end up manually changing Backup Reserve percentages throughout the day to stop irrational behaviour. I’ve literally had to start creating my own staged reserve schedule: 03:00 → 70%, 15:00 → 60%, 18:00 → 40%, 21:00 → 20% …just to make the system behave sensibly for when I can fill up with cheap off-peak energy 00:00-06:00. And even that is a compromise. I really think that Tesla can and should move away from crude fixed-rule logic and toward adaptive preference-based optimisation.

Imagine simple sliders like:
Backup resilience ↔ Maximum savings
Self-consumption ↔ Grid support
Battery longevity ↔ Aggressive arbitrage

Then let the system learn over time. For example:
“This household consistently has a large expensive pre-midnight demand spike. Preserve more battery for that period.” That feels much more like what Tesla should be capable of.

Right now many Powerwall owners are effectively doing manual energy-trading optimisation themselves because the software isn’t nuanced enough. It could be so great! Please think about it @TeslaEnergy

The pollen from the London plane trees during these two weeks of the year is like fibreglass, gets in the eyes, throat, lungs. Nobody is immune. It’s not a native tree, it’s a man-made hybrid, even though many of them are pretty old. There ought to be a ban on planting it, and they should be gradually replaced with native trees.
