I would like to rise the awareness about new sophisticated ways of #CRYPTOSCAMS ⚠️

Last week, a Community Manager from a new Play2Earn game (with a verified Twitter account - removed already) approached me. The game was in its beta testing phase, and he offered me the chance to test it. They also mentioned a Bug Bounty program. I thought it would be cool to introduce it to my community, especially if there was a reward involved. Although I'm not a gamer, I was intrigued enough to give it a try.

After conducting a brief research about the game, I found they had a professional-looking website, a transparent team, a detailed roadmap, and impressive graphics. Nothing seemed out of place, though it's possible that some assets might have been lifted from other sources. Encouraged, I decided to download the game.

That was my first mistake...

My #antivirus didn’t flag any issues, and the only prompt from #Windows was to allow the software installation, which is standard. However, upon trying to run the game, I encountered an error. When I reached out to the Community Manager for assistance, he suggested updating the .NET Framework. Despite following his advice, the game still wouldn’t launch. Disappointed, I uninstalled it and shut dwn my PC. Later on, while finishing my dinner, I noticed substantial unauthorized transfers notification from @zerion : 4k $USDC, followed by 1.5k $USDT, and then 1.5 $ETH …

I immediately realized the gravity of the situation – there was no suspicious approvals on my wallet so someone had gained access to my private keys.

Checking my other sub-accounts, I saw that my $ARB and several stable coins were gone. Smaller wallets were being emptied right before my eyes, as observed on @DeBankDeFi . I deduced that there were multiple individuals or groups simultaneously attacking my MetaMask wallet. Despite my efforts to secure my assets until the early morning, they managed to siphon over $44k, I managed to save and send my way $4k.

Thankfully, my other hot wallet plugins remained untouched, but I didn't take any chances and transferred the remaining funds to new wallets or centralized exchanges.

This was clearly a targeted attack. They knew what they were looking for and extracted exactly that. While reaching out to others for advice, I realized the hacker had access to my messages and had deleted a month's worth of them. After securing my accounts, I learned from others that similar schemes were being employed under different project/game names. Some scams were even disguised as job offers on #Discord, promising an unusually high weekly pay.

In my case, I suspect a keylogger was involved, which would have allowed the hackers to monitor my keystrokes. They probably identified my MetaMask password and exported the private keys. Thankfully, my hardware wallet's connection to #MetaMask kept some of my funds safe.

With the proliferation of verified scam accounts spamming phishing sites and promoting supposed "airdrop campaigns", the risks are evident. They even run ads to boost their reach. With the assistance of AI, these scams will likely evolve and become even more sophisticated. Thus, we need to up our game and remain vigilant.

Remember: the internet can be a perilous place. If you're serious about crypto, consider investing in a hardware wallet. And perhaps most importantly, trust no one without thorough verification. It might also be wise to dedicate a separate computer for your crypto dealings, preferably a Mac, and avoid downloading unnecessary software.
