A 14-year-old Indiana girl allegedly spent the final months of her life locked inside her bedroom, monitored by a security camera and forced to ask permission to use the bathroom. Investigators say her access to food and water was also restricted.
Jamiyah Mayfieldโs weight reportedly dropped from 124 pounds to just 80 pounds before her death.
According to investigators, Jamiyahโs father, Jerry Mayfield, and stepmother, Toris Mayfield, became increasingly restrictive after removing her from public school and switching her to homeschooling. Authorities allege that her bedroom door was modified to lock from the outside and that the only window in the room was secured so it couldnโt be opened.
Investigators also reportedly recovered messages between the couple discussing what food Jamiyah was allowed to eat. Video footage from inside the home allegedly documented her physical decline.
Months before her death, Jamiyah had received medical treatment for swelling in her legs, weight loss and marks on her skin. On July 2, 2025, her stepmother called 911 after finding her unresponsive. Jamiyah was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An amended autopsy determined that Jamiyah died from complications of severe protein-calorie malnutrition and dehydration. A child-abuse pediatrician who reviewed the case reportedly described the circumstances as โdiagnostic of child torture.โ
Arrest warrants have been issued for Jerry and Toris Mayfield. Both face felony charges related to the alleged neglect of Jamiyah, including neglect resulting in serious bodily injury. The exact charges should be confirmed against the court records.
The manner of Jamiyahโs death was classified as undetermined. Neither defendant has been convicted of the allegations.
Jamiyah was a 14-year-old girl who loved to sing and dance. Investigators allege that she spent her final months confined and deprived of basic necessities in the home where she should have been protected.
