68 of the 532 Crown courtrooms in England and Wales are sitting empty today — that’s 13%.

Yet David Lammy claims the only way to tackle the Crown Court backlog is to curb our ancient right to trial by jury.

Jury trials are not the problem.

The problem is that a significant proportion of Crown courtrooms sit empty on working days.

The Institute for Government has shown that the Government’s jury trial reforms would save just 2% of Crown Court time — not the 20% ministers promised.

Opposition to these plans is widespread, spanning judges, lawyers, opposition MPs, Labour backbenchers, and even Sir Keir Starmer’s former legal mentors and Doughty Street Chambers.

They warn these reforms will undermine public confidence in the justice system and increase the risk of assaults on judges.

Open the courts. Protect trial by jury.
