Interesting find on today's dive in Roatán: this Acropora "prolifera" coral is a hybrid of staghorn (A. cervicornis) and elkhorn (A. palmata). Potential parents were nearby. All were actively growing and healthy. Even small colonies give me #HopeForReefs

Yet EVERY CORAL REEF in the world started from coral larvae doing THIS EXACT THING

We think (we THINK!) that no human on Earth had ever seen baby pineapple corals developing until 2018. Here they are, baby Dichocoenia stokesii developing from egg to embryo to larva to settled primary polyp! (composite of 6 images from Team CARMABI)🍍🌟💛
