If you don't understand, ask questions. If you're uncomfortable about asking questions, say you are uncomfortable about asking questions and then ask anyway. - Bob McGrath via @ASCD
When kids struggle with reading or math, we provide more support and practice. When they struggle with behavior, we often do the opposite. Imagine giving a detention for poor ELA performance. Does anyone think that would help? Me either. #thatonekid
93% of student misbehavior is because they want attention
7% of student misbehavior is because they want power
Blowups happen in schools because the 7% of teachers who want power cross paths with the 7% of students who want power.

Because many students don’t understand their working memory, they study ineffectively, she says. They read over their notes or stare at a list of vocabulary words and think “I’ve got it.” @dfkris https://t.co/tI04Gr2Xaq
If the behavior plan with the hardest to reach kid does not involve more connection & relationship time it will fail. Period. #thatonekid#relationships1st
Redefine . . reading. Julia Torres is a firm believer in teaching skills, not texts. She encourages students, even high school, to listen to audiobooks . Find a way to teach important skills like comprehension or critical thinking with the texts that excite and interest students.
Shaming reading choices can create reading trauma. If students are told that what they like to read (comics, manga and fan fiction, for example) do not “count,” they can disengage and lose their identities as readers.
