Well, back then people knew how to cook for themselves and did so. Fast food did not exist.

People also helped their neighbors. Nowadays they barely know their neighbors.

More families stayed together instead of separate parenting.

There were no "subscription plans" for things.

Entertainment was mostly free since people would go outside and do things for free.

There was no monthly cell phone bill.

There was no Internet bill.

There was (for the most part) no Air Conditioning electric bill.

People fixed their own cars.

People did their own plumbing repairs.

People repaired their own houses.

People cut their own hair.

Men had (at most) two pairs of shoes.

Women didn't use as many, or as expensive beauty products.

Children were expected to help around the house.

Children did not have cell phones.

People were taught personal economics in high school.

People were expected to move up in their careers rather than stay on minimum wage till they are in their late 30s.

And most of all... People didn't blame others for their lot in life. If they wanted better, they knew they had to go out and earn it.

Consumerism plays a part, as does where we shop.
Back then they were financially better off because people spent most of their money in their local community, supported their neighbors, & didn't have technology sucking them dry.

Now people give all their money to big-corp then complain that big-corp has all their money.
