Hibernating bear "Chada" wakes up after a long nap at White Rock Bear Sanctuary in Kyiv

Hibernation refers to a state of dormancy or inactivity that certain bear species enter during the winter months.
Bears don't experience true hibernation, but rather a state called torpor. During this period, bears undergo a significant reduction in metabolic rate, heart rate, and body temperature. They typically retreat to a den or a sheltered place to conserve energy and survive the scarcity of food during the winter.

While in this state, bears are not fully asleep but rather in a state of reduced physiological activity. They can wake up from their torpid state if disturbed or if there are warmer periods. Hibernation allows bears to conserve energy and survive the winter without the need for constant foraging.
