New Article by Liang Ge: “In the Name of Pro-Women”: Intra-Women Surveillance and Internalized Misogyny in Digital East Asia | Article | Media and Communication https://t.co/B5NBEdbi2w check it out! 😊
5/ The comparative lens matters: In China, censorship displaces outward critique → inward, intensifying intra-group policing as a "safer" outlet. In South Korea, post-Gangnam antagonistic repertoires are mirrored (Kim 2021) inside feminist publics themselves.
4/I propose internalized and networked misogyny: hegemonic feminist norms reproduced through affective self-surveillance, then scaled into public discipline via platform infrastructure.
The "compromising woman" ambivalent, negotiating under patriarchy, becomes the target.

6/ Theoretically I build on misogyny-as-affect (Harrington 2025; Ahmed; Manne), Banet-Weiser on popular feminism/misogyny as co-constitutive, and Ross on calling in vs calling out.
Solidarity in the platform era is not given. It's a fragile, mediated achievement.

Drawing on interviews with young women in China & South Korea, I show how platform affordances — ranking, screenshotting, pile-ons, algorithmic amplification — translate feminist scripts of refusal into coercive tests of moral purity.

A short 🧵 on what's in it.
Most work on digital misogyny locates it in male-dominated formations — the manosphere, male-to-female harassment.
But on Weibo, Douban, X or theqoo, "pro-women" publics can also become sites of intense intra-gender disciplining: women policing other women in feminist vocabulary.

New paper (with Tingting Hu) in New Media & Society on VTubers and digital intimacy!🔥
We introduce “affective liquidity” to describe how intimacy flows across voices, avatars, technologies, and fan labour in more-than-human assemblages.

2/ For women fans, the screen functions both as an immersive interface and a protective buffer, enabling non-normative desire while managing vulnerability.

🔹I argue for sympoietic creativity:a collaborative practice where humans curate machine stochasticity rather than simply commanding a tool
This work challenges us to harness AI's disruptive potential for posthuman futures while maintaining strict ethical vigilance.
🆕Publication Arrived!!! Are AI hallucinations bugs to be fixed, or the start of a new kind of creativity? My new paper, "Spectral imaginings and sympoietic creativity," explores how we might move beyond binary framings of AI errors. Check it out here: https://t.co/FMtMzUUSGG
🔹 The Fluency Trade-off: I analyze why models like DeepSeek-R1 (with a higher hallucination rate) differ from factual optimizers like ChatGPT-o1. The paper examines how "Chain-of-Thought" reasoning enhances creativity but inherently amplifies "spectral" outputs.
We often dismiss AI hallucinations as mere technical failures or epistemic risks. In this article,I propose a different perspective: these generative anomalies act as hermeneutic knots: sites where algorithmic noise and human agency entangle to produce new modes of meaning-making
