This Is Night On Mars. 140 million miles away. No cities, no light pollution, no one.
Just you and a billion stars that have never been looked at like this.
Great post - especially as we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Paine's earlier pamphlet "Common Sense" sold over 120,000 copies in just three months - when the whole colonial population was only about 2.5 million. Basically one in every twenty people read it - really lighting the fuse. 🇺🇸
King John of England signed the Magna Carta at Runnymede today in 1215, which established the principle that the king and his government were not above the law.
“A man who has read a thousand books is armed for life; a man who has read none is easy prey. The man who has read a thousand books has lived a thousand lives. He has seen cities he has never visited, spoken to men who died centuries ago, and walked in worlds that no longer exist. Reading does not merely inform him; it enlarges him. It stretches the boundaries of his own experience until he becomes something more than himself.”
-G. K. Chesterton
@nickitruesdell “In a good bookroom you feel in some mysterious way that you are absorbing the wisdom contained in all the books through your skin, without even opening them.”
― Mark Twain
