To coincide with today’s bicentenary of the beginning of the Demerara uprising (18 August 1823), I have just published a paper with @HistoryPolicy, co-authored with Dr James Dawkins (Lancaster University).

200 yrs ago today (18 Aug 1823) witnessed the outbreak of the Demerara uprising, as thousands of enslaved people across some forty estates rose up to demand their 'rights' & their 'freedom'. One of the largest & most consequential revolts in the history of the British Caribbean.
‘Slowly, over time, I tried to absorb what my whiteness signified, both before and after empire.’

We've got a fascinating seminar coming up on Thursday on 'Institutional figures: Quantifying links to slavery and colonialism in British art galleries'! This event is comprised of two brilliant papers by Sean Cham and Liberty Paterson!

Can't wait to read this! Andrew Bogle's portrait is in the @NPGLondon. Have been researching him while looking at the Gallery's legacies of enslavement. He was previously enslaved by the Chandos family who owned the NPG's "Chandos portrait" of Shakespeare. https://t.co/127rqvoIBv
Late update: last week we, the History of Collecting group organised “Not a Conference” for @CDPConnect students with exciting presentations, demos of tools of the trades and discussions on trials and tribulations we face as researchers. Thanks to all the presenters & @ahrcpress
We are delighted to announce that John will represent Great Britain at the 2024 @la_Biennale. It is a great honour and a privilege and we look forward to the challenge. Thanks to all the special people at the @BritishArts and the selection committee for entrusting 1/2
