The journey less traveled clarifies people fast, and history is rather blunt about this.

Marcus Aurelius buried his children, endured plague and war, and watched trusted advisors fold when pressure arrived. He ruled in isolation. If he were next to me as I type this, he would say:

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it.”

Withdrawal is external, mission, integrity, and direction are internal. No one can control who stays when winter hits, but you do control whether you become more precise.

You tighten discipline, simplify the mission, and keep marching.

Abraham Lincoln failed in business, lost elections, and watched friends and allies disappear when political capital dried up. What he learned is that you can’t build history on certainty before commitment. Loneliness is the tax of responsibility.
