@CapacityKing@siannnyyy26@McBidens You probably do to be fair, not many Brits really delve into the history of the country because I think we kind of take it for granted. I did study history so I’m a bit more informed on things, my main studies were around wartime history teachings
@CapacityKing@siannnyyy26@McBidens It seems like you really like to experience and dig deep into other cultures which is good. Refreshing to have a conversation with an American that isn’t sheltered and just wants to argue about how superior you are. X is a cesspit at times and Brits are just as bad.
@CapacityKing@siannnyyy26@McBidens I’ve always felt welcome in the US except for the odd few people, but on the whole everyone was super friendly. Although I was mistakes for being Australian a lot because I am from the north of England, our accent isn’t the one that’s often shown on US TV.
@CapacityKing@siannnyyy26@McBidens The French are a bit hit and miss. We have a love to hate relationship that goes both ways. It’s weird.
Brits can come across as rude sometimes because we insult people a lot, but we insult our friends, it’s a sign of affection rather than malice
@CapacityKing@siannnyyy26@McBidens I’m not a fan of marmite. The advertisement slogan for it is “you either love it or hate it”
Fair play to you for trying jellied eels though. I’m over 30 years old and I’ve never actually met anyone that’s had them. I wouldn’t dare have them. Not for me.
@CapacityKing@McBidens We have ice cream sandwiches like Oreo ice cream sandwiches and things like that but for some reason ice cream cake does not exist here. Can’t even order one online. I’m not a big fan of cake on its own
@CapacityKing@McBidens Yeah our standard side with steak is chips (fries) but I kinda liked the baked potato side, it was different.
One thing we don’t get here which I had over there for my birthday was an ice cream cake. I loved it. For some reason they just don’t exist here
@Schoolboy_Hew@McBidens@CapacityKing I really want to go to New Orleans, Kentucky etc. never had any Cajun food over there yet and I want to try some new and different things
@CapacityKing@McBidens My first time over there I ordered a burger and chips and the waitress looked at me weird. I was served a burger and chips. I was expecting fries, instead I got crisps 😂
@CapacityKing@McBidens Yeah the only time I’ve ever had one over in the US was when it came as a side. I went to a classic diner in NJ and ordered a steak and it came with the spud as a side and at first I was a bit confused.
@CapacityKing@McBidens Oh believe me it sounded horrendous to me. I was 25 when I first had it. I like garlic butter, salt, pepper, spicy beef and crispy onions on mine. Sometimes I’ll go for a creamy chicken and peppers, that’s good
@Schoolboy_Hew@McBidens@CapacityKing Southern BBQ is awesome not gonna lie, I’ve had some good stuff there. The best wings I’ve ever had were over in the US, but ironically the best burger I’ve had is in the UK.
American BBQ is starting to take off here and indi places do good stuff, the chains are shit.
@CapacityKing@McBidens Yeah our jacket spuds are very similar to the US we just have different variations of toppings and fillings. Tuna cheese and beans is a pretty common combo. It sounds awful but it’s ok. Not my go to. I have family in the US so I’ve been there quite a lot.
@CapacityKing@McBidens No as a Brit beans on toast is a cheap, easy quick meal. Mix in mature cheddar and Worcestershire sauce and it’s a filling quick “can’t be bothered to cook” meal. I’d take a good burger over that!
The pie shop is just popular cos of its age, me and my friend didn’t like it.
@CapacityKing@McBidens Honestly London is only good for your expensive restaurants. I lived there 5 years and wasn’t really a fan. As far as pies and especially fish and chips the north of England is far better. The best fish and chips you’ll get are by coastal towns such as Whitby.
@CapacityKing@McBidens Depends where you went for a pie in all honesty. I’ve had some amazing pies in places and some absolutely shite bland ones.
Also with fish and chips, look for places that do beer battered fish, then get salt, vinegar and lemon juice on it.
@CapacityKing@McBidens We season our food well. My spice cupboard is full of different things I use. The no seasoning thing is a long drawn out and false stereotype. A staple dish such as shepherd pie uses salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, garlic etc. It’s the ability of the cook that makes bad food.
