On February 26–27, Lawyers Alert Nigeria convened legal practitioners, civil society actors, healthcare professionals, and policymakers in Abeokuta, Ogun State, for a two-day intensive workshop on Safe Termination of Pregnancy (STOP) laws and reproductive rights litigation in Nigeria.
Participants engaged with real-life scenarios, the intersection of law, health, and human rights. Through case-based learning, participants strengthened survivor-centred legal responses, refined strategic litigation approaches, and drew comparative lessons from Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa to inform rights-based advocacy in Nigeria.
By the close of the workshop, participants developed a coordinated action plan to guide ongoing litigation, strengthen cross-sector collaboration, and advance the domestication and implementation of the Maputo Protocol, positioning Ogun State as a model for national replication.
This initiative reinforces the capacity of legal actors to respond rapidly to violations, protect reproductive autonomy, and advance justice for women and girls across Nigeria.

As part of our ongoing efforts to advance reproductive rights in Nigeria, we paid a strategic working visit to the Ogun State Judiciary, led by the Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Mosunmola Arinola Dipeolu, FICMC, and represented by the Chief Registrar and management team. The visit provided a critical opportunity to position Lawyers Alert as a key partner in advancing rights-based initiatives within the state’s justice system.
We briefed the team on our recently concluded trainings in the state and highlighted our reproductive rights initiatives, proposing collaboration, integration of junior Ministry of Justice staff into future trainings, and opportunities for judges to share practical insights with participants. These proposals are designed to strengthen capacity, foster knowledge-sharing, and embed reproductive rights awareness across the judiciary.
The Chief Registrar and the team commended Lawyers Alert’s work, expressed readiness to support our proposals. The engagement successfully strengthened our institutional ties with the Judiciary, created pathways for meaningful collaboration, and amplified our influence in promoting reproductive rights.

SHE JUST WANTED A WAY OUT!
She was only 17. A teenage girl, already a mother, already carrying more than her young shoulders should bear. Living with HIV and struggling to survive, she discovered she was pregnant again by the same man who had taken advantage of her.
Her life could have been different if only the law had given a chance.
Let's give that chance to the next girl.
