A new study finds that our planet’s parks, forests, and abandoned lands have enough space in them to plant 1.2 trillion additional trees. This is enough to capture 10 years’ worth of Co2, making it one of the most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas.

“(Any) Body Oddly Propped,” at princetonu_artmuseum are beautiful sculptures by @dmstarn that @faktorl and I happened by. They are made by etching inner layers of glass with a pioneering technique I don’t understand, which results in a dance of light, color, shadow.

A sneak peek Laura Plageman’s new work for our 2019 show. She is our tree hunting heroine who flew east from her home in California, and drove around the HRV in search of old growth eastern hemlocks like this one. We love her beautiful distortions.
Hemlock’s phenomenal ability to survive in shade is readily apparent in the annual growth rings on almost any stump. We recently cut down a four-foot-tall hemlock sapling to estimate its age and compare its growth to that of the overhanging trees and found 60 rings in 1 1/3 inch!

On our hike up Wittenberg Mountain in the Catskills, we encountered brave trees, rebellious trees, and dancing trees. Each invites us to get closer and listen to its story of how the environment has influenced its growth.
During the three days of YPW, the teens made field recordings of sounds that can be found inside the wood surrounding the city of Hudson. Composer @Scott_Thorough led our class through the many ways one can seek out sound in nature and turn it into rhythm.
We love seeing projects that document tree life in real time because tree time is not human time. Trees take a long time to grow, react, adapt--and even to die.
This tree is just one ordinary oak that is documented by The Witness Tree Social Media Project @HarvardForest.

The Architecture of Trees by Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi contains not only tree illustrations with and without foliage but also tables of seasonal color variations and projections of shadows cast during the hours of daylight, and season by season.

I am just an average oak tree, but boy do I take up space! My total surface area (without even including my roots) is 437 square meters -- about 1.25 times as big as an IMAX screen! Thanks to the Schaaf Lab at @EnvSchool for the cool LIDAR selfie that computed these stats.
When we shot this pic of moss, ferns, and fungus sharing a boulder so nicely, we were channeling our fall exhibit artist @tanyamarcuse during a hike up Wittenberg Mountain in the Catskills to research our fall exhibit which was more of a forest tooth and claw feel.
