The funny fact is that if Zach Cregger removed the words "Resident Evil", "Raccoon City" and "Umbrella Corporation" from his movie but kept everything else the same... I could see a lot of naysayers calling it the closest thing to a good Resident Evil Movie 🤣

Not adapting a specific game and dropping the legacy characters might actually be the best thing that happened to this franchise.

Every previous Resident Evil movie tried to cram in characters, mythology and fan-service, and most of them ended up being a mess. Cregger was way more interested in making you feel what it’s actually like to play Resident Evil, being confused, underprepared, scared and constantly wondering what the hell is around the next corner.

and that’s why I think cregger's story works so well. he's not trying to explain every piece of Umbrella lore or spend half the movie explaining the T-virus. It’s literally just one guy trying to survive and get somewhere while monsters keep making his life hell. Maybe Resident Evil never needed to be a perfect adaptation of the games. Maybe it just needed to make you feel like you’re playing one.
