Fun Fact #4: Did you know each white cane is different? A cane which is completely white is used by persons who are blind. A cane painted red towards the bottom indicates user has some vision. A cane with multiple stripes of red & white color indicates vision and hearing loss.
Fun Fact #2: The way to use a white cane was developed in 1944 by Richard Hoover, he used a white cane while being blindfolded for a week. This experience is now the standard method of “long cane” training or the Hoover Method, which involves swinging the cane back and forth.
Fact #1: White canes are white because of George A. Bonham. In 1930, Bonham, president of the Lions Club, watched a man who was blind attempting to cross a street. His cane was black & motorists couldn’t see it, so he painted the cane white with a red stripe to make it noticed.
There’s no better day to celebrate the power of the white cane than October 15 – White Cane Day. We will celebrate NOW through the 15th - posting FUN FACTS about the white cane. THEN on the 15th, we will test your knowledge with a Trivia Game - Great prizes for the winners.
