Today is World Mental Health Day.

1 in 3 people reading this will either have had mental health issues or will do.

Amongst men in particular there's a huge disconnect when it comes to reaching out for help or advice. The stubborn bravado of "proud" men is still too strong at times to seek help.

I've lost 2 friends to hanging. I've also succumbed to suicidal thoughts in the past and to anyone who has contemplated suicide I feel your anxiety, worthlessness and torture at the thoughts that take you there.

There isn't enough mental heath provision in the UK, so many only have friends or family to lean on for what should be specialist advice and care, but trust me if you're a Mum, Dad, sibling or friend of someone who struggles you have no idea how staying in the game " with them preserves life. It did mine.

If you struggle, there are wonderful charities on here, just do a simple search or online. If you're a family member of someone who struggles, talk to them, never judge or tell them to "get on with it", because that just doesn't work. Be present, be patient, and if necessary reach out to professionals on their behalf.

And never forget, not only could it be you struggling someday, but mental health issues aren't a day or a meme or a campaign.

They're many people's every day existence, and sometimes they have to fight very hard to stay alive.

Talk.
Reach out.
Seek professional help.
Exercise.

Preserve life. Yours.
