If you’re Joe Hortiz and you’ve watched your IOL provide a police escort to Justin Herbert for two years, is there a better way to identify and adjust to stunts and blitzes than filling 2/3 of your OL with centers? Not hard to see the logic in that approach.
FWIW, the hosts on NFL Radio’s broadcast of the draft said pretty much the same thing Hortiz said about Jake Slaughter. They said he was their favorite prospect in the draft regardless regardless of position.
He literally led BountyGate. He paid players to injure opposing players. Jesus Christ.
There should be no coming back from certain things as a coach. This is one of those things.
I ask/expect five things from Mike McDaniel’s offense:
•+++ autonomy for Herbert at LOS
•spam motion, movement, window dressing, fakes
•be creative/unpredictable with the pocket
•attack open space
•create easy buttons for Herbert to get the ball out quickly
Make it happen.
My takeaways from the Mike McDaniel presser today:
•flexible game planning
•not married to a scheme
•focused on putting the defense in conflict
•relies on movement, spacing, being unpredictable
•will be different from what he ran in MIA
•likely to be ahead of DEF trends
