Despite the theoretical allowance of religion in the Soviet Union, it was persecuted throughout the regime. The Yevsektsiya, the Jewish section of the Communist party, pursued traditional Judaism with particular fervor.
They outlawed the yeshivos, they tried to shut down Jewish practice wherever they could.

(he ideological purity and commitment to Communism did little save them. Just as they drowned others, so too were they drowned. Stalin killed them in the Purges.)
