Quebec is dropping approximately 440,000 oral rabies vaccine baits from low-flying planes across nearly 3,200 km² and 62 municipalities from September 19–23.

They’re deliberately made with a sweet odour to attract wildlife, and their camouflage colouring means they can be difficult for humans to spot once they hit the ground.

And the official advice? Don’t handle them.

If one is crushed or punctured, avoid the liquid, use a tool to dispose of it and wash your hands. Contact with the vaccine liquid means calling 811.

Officials say the bait is considered safe for humans, pets and the environment and cannot transmit rabies - but they still advise people not to handle it.

So let me get this straight…

We’re dropping hundreds of thousands of edible vaccine packets from the sky, deliberately designed to attract animals and blend into the environment…

and then telling everyone not to touch them.
