The irony of @SA_Taxis SANTACO lecturing the public on the importance of upholding the rule of law ahead of the planned national protests should not be lost on anyone.

This is the same SANTACO whose members routinely disregard traffic regulations with apparent impunity and have, for years, been accused of obstructing e-hailing operators from conducting business freely, particularly at Gautrain stations and other transport hubs.

What makes the situation even more troubling is the perception that, when it suits its purposes, @SAPoliceService is willing to align itself with an industry long associated with allegations of wanton killings, lawlessness and intimidation, while taking a hard line against protesting civilians — the very people the acting minister referred to as “enemies” today.

In 2013, I had the unfortunate experience of being involved in a collision with a minibus taxi that left my then uninsured vehicle beyond repair. As is all too common in such cases, the driver — an undocumented Zimbabwean national — had neither valid insurance nor the requisite driving permit.

The taxi owner simply disclaimed any responsibility and insisted that the driver resolve the matter himself. The driver informed me that he earned just R250 per week, while the cost of repairing my vehicle exceeded R200,000.

That experience offered a stark illustration of how accountability is often avoided within parts of the industry.

It also helps explain why SANTACO may be reluctant to confront the issue of undocumented foreign drivers — a system from which some operators appear to derive economic benefit through the exploitation of vulnerable workers.

Such contradictions do little to inspire public confidence in the consistent and impartial application of the rule of law.

Strange bedfellows indeed.

Why are Police reporting a hightened state of readiness including the SANDF to deal with March and March on the 30 June, but this same level of readiness is NEVER laid out to deal with illegal foreigners in Hillbrow, Sunnyside and elsewhere in the country????
