Next Monday, a statutory public inquiry will open into the deaths of mental health inpatients in Essex.
Without the courage, persistence and determination of bereaved families and survivors campaigning - the inquiry would not be happening.

I have previously written about the need for a National Oversight Mechanism. I am passionate about the work my team and I do on major inquests and public inquiries but without someone making sure that the recommendations are actually implemented, much needed changes will 1/3
A Hillsborough Law will make it harder for public bodies + officials to lie to Inquiries and victims.
This is a step towards justice for all current and future victims of the state. We owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who has campaigned for decades to make this happen.
A Hillsborough Law would be an important step towards tackling this, and building a culture in which public bodies openly and honestly address failings in the aftermath of tragedies. It should be an immediate priority for the next government.
Just this week the Infected Blood Inquiry found that the harms done to those affected were compounded by: “A lack of openness, transparency and candour, shown by the NHS and government, such that the truth has been hidden for decades.”🧵
Delay, denial and defensiveness is the default response to those bereaved after state related deaths, more concerned with reputation management than learning and accountability. Good to see @HumanRightsCtte support #HillsboroughLaw to end this shocking injustice @NowHillsborough
Lawyers representing the bereaved at inquests see the awful consequences of this play out again and again; a lack of institutional openness and learning mean repeated inquests expose the same failures.
