“We wanted to go in that Robert Mapplethorpe direction. We all love [Connor’s] natural curls. He doesn't need a whole lot, and it just made sense to go in that sort of effortless, hunky late '70s, early '80s feeling.”
GQ also went into detail about the techniques used to achieve Connor’s look, describing the haircut and the products used to style it:
“The signature of this look is the perfect diagonal line that occurs where the fringe meets the perimeter of the haircut. On a technical level, the haircut required “90-degree square layering,” per Birns, where the hair is pulled out at a right angle from the head and snipped to help with weight distribution and texturization. The sides of the hair also have a slight taper so that it still has that “masculine square shape.” And because Birns employed a point-cutting technique—cutting into the hair with the tip of the scissors rather than cutting a straight, blunt line across—the hair has a more “lived-in” and “rough” look opposed to the tightly tailored cuts of yore.
In the video, Birns says Storrie’s hair probably has around eight products in it—a detail that’s hard to believe given how weightless and bouncy it moves. “It’s a little bit of prep, a little bit of a curl cream and an oil mixed together, a little bit of a thickening spray, and then a light cream or texture paste of some sort at the end that you run through to give it a little pieciness,” she says. The key is to use minimal amounts of each product so the hair doesn’t get weighed down, and then using a hair diffuser to give additional volume. It’s then finished off with a sea salt spray to help accentuate the curls. “It's really fun and flirty and playful,” says Birns.”
