“A story is showing. Telling is going on the brain side, the logical side…A lot of times we have data, and we put up these wonderful charts…but that is telling. You want to tell the story behind why this looks like this…So you can actually tell data through stories,” she said.
Yesterday, I attended a @NYWICI event featuring keynote speaker Robyn Hatcher @SpeakETC. She covered presentation delivery and a presenter’s use of emotion and logic to take the viewer on a journey.
Robyn further related this concept to using data in storytelling:
“Symbols and names and iconography aren’t just symbols; they’re reflective of the stories that people tell. Those stories shape the narratives that communities carry. And those narratives shape public policy. And public policy shapes the material conditions of people’s lives.”
Clint Smith, a staff writer at The Atlantic, speaks about his book “How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America” at a Leaders in Communications event tonight for @NewhouseSU#cusespeakers
I've spent the past two months delving into the life of Neilia Hunter — a teacher, a mother and a role model. The journey's helped me get to know our current president as well. The biggest thank you to everyone who helped me with this piece. Thank you ❤️

If you write for a student-run publication or have done any reporting at all, you’re not an “aspiring” journalist— you are a journalist. You earned the title. Own it.
I worked @dailyorange for 6 semesters, and the whole time I worked another 40 hours a week serving food so I could pay my rent. I earned more money in a single hour serving coffee and salads than I did in a whole day producing this newspaper. (1/8)
