Thomas Merton delivers brutal truth in the most compassionate way

[Heidi Priebe 🌆🍁 @HeidiPriebe1]

Thinking a lot about the concept of maturity lately. I imagine for most, the ages of ~25-30 are illuminating for recognizing whether you're on the path to maturing naturally or whether you need to do some intentional course-correcting. 🧵

If you have difficult people that are close to you (family, work, friends), it's served me well to view them as 'hard mode' on training my self-knowledge / meditative equanimity / emotional fluidity

“Creativity is predicated on uncertainty. Strive for certainty and you kill creativity.”

// Iain McGilchrist, The Matter with Things

[Lauren @LiminalLo]

Humans don’t like uncertainty; we tend to actively avoid it.

It’s less about seeking certainty — for some things, this is impossible.

It’s more about creating coherence around the uncertainty — whether that be via faith or theories — that helps us cope with this fact.

Life is approximation.

[Lauren @LiminalLo]

Which is reminiscent of Walt Whitman in his poem “Song of Myself” as he turns this concept inward.

“Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself.
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)”

[Lauren @LiminalLo]

“Contradiction is a poor criterion of truth.
Many things that are certain are contradicted; many things that are false pass without contradiction. Contradiction is not a sign of falsehood, nor the lack of contradiction a sign of truth”
// Blaise Pascal

“How do you know you are on your path?
Because it disappears.”

[Lauren @LiminalLo]

“To live in this world
 you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it
go,
to let it go.”
// Mary Oliver, In Blackwater Woods

How beautifully simple and simply written yet painfully profound
