Romi Gonen was kidnapped from Nova on October 7, 2023. During the first month of her captivity in Gaza, she was r*ped repeatedly by four different men.

At one point, she was crying so intensely in a Hamas tunnel that she was summoned for a call with a senior Hamas official. On the phone, Izz al-Din al-Haddad — then commander of Hamas’s Northern Gaza Brigade and now Hamas’s top leader in Gaza — asked her to explain her situation. After hearing how his men had treated her, he offered her a deal: remain silent about the sexual assaults, and he would place her at the top of the release list.

Romi Gonen was released on January 19, 2025. On the day of her release, Haddad told her: “Here, you’re going out first. Do you remember your promise to me? I hope you fulfill it.”

Romi waited until all the hostages were released before telling her story, fearing Hamas would retaliate against those still in captivity. Now, she will never be silenced again.
