On June 17, 2026, the CSPD was notified that Howard the tortoise had been stolen from a local pet store. Detectives quickly followed up on information provided by the store and were able to identify a suspect, 37-year-old Justin Edwards.
On June 18, 2026, Edwards was located at a local hotel and taken into custody. However, Howard was not found at that location. Detectives continued their investigation, conducted additional interviews, and developed information that led them to Howard's whereabouts.
Thankfully, Howard was safely recovered and reunited with the pet store.
This case is a great example of what can happen when the community partners with law enforcement. Information shared by the pet store, witnesses, and members of the public through social media helped detectives develop the leads needed to bring Howard home safely.
Thank you to everyone who shared information and assisted in the investigation. Your partnership makes a difference.
As in every criminal case, Mr. Edwards is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. #HowardtheTortoise

In Colorado Springs, intentional fire setting is not a prank, it’s not “kids being kids,” and it's not a harmless mistake.
The conditions we’re seeing right now and the conditions we saw when all of these fires were set – it's how wildfires start.
To those responsible: This is not a joke. This is not a mistake. You are putting lives, homes, and our city at risk. Parents, talk to your kids today. Fire-setting is not harmless, and it is not a prank.

JUST IN: The Sheriff tells us all Guthrie family members have been eliminated as suspects.
PCSD says, “To be clear…the Guthrie family - to include all siblings and spouses - has been cleared as possible suspects in this case. The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case.
To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel. The Guthrie family are victims plain and simple…please, I’m begging you the media to honor your profession and report with some sense of compassion and professionalism.”
The #FBI is now offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the location of Nancy Guthrie and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.
