it's been noted that ewoks were a sign of things to come but frankly the amping up of Lucasisms was already there in empire. chewie carrying a disassembled 3p0 was already the shark being jumped
rewatched the OT (original theatrical cuts). a new hope i do genuinely like on its own terms, it sticks the landing for feeling like a long-running science fantasy action adventure serial. by empire it was already over, it became Stars War
i don't *dislike* the other two movies but they're carried by luke/leia/han, and luke/vader. notably, luke/vader wasn't set up as nearly as much of a thing in e4, for how central that is to the franchise. it'd've worked as a standalone movie and been better off for it
apropos of [gesturing broadly] and nothing in particular, the incraesingly dominant political self-identification seems to be 'rapture was never possible but it's *you guys'* fault it didn't happen, so we need to drag you in the streets and kill you with hammers', just madlibbed
progressives (distinct category from communists), third worldists (distinct category from communists) communists (distinct c-), feminists of most stripes, eds/htwt groypers, qanon, khive, gamers who just want to grill, OSINT guys, ukrainiacs, that's the tendency
fringe phenomena that've never had generational turnover before are having generational turnover. thousand baader-meinhoffs barrelling down the pipe with no ideological coherency beyond the above
'actually it's marxist to think supply/demand is real' is downstream from 'even by its own standards right wing economics is poopoo caca' which is a true but useless argument - unless you were specifically looking to own some chud Online. it now just stuck around as a truism
you can't be moving like this muke it's not 2019 anymore. obviously you're right and supply/demand lemon stand economics is bullshit but you can't be posting like this. then again it's a condemnation of breadtube and the debateosphere more than anything
@SpeedRush11 idolatrize world at #1 is trvke, respectable picks. you're sleeping on UDOALG though, path to yomi and deviant's unobstructed light are something else

by coincidence i saw these two back to back and, i have absolutely no ill will toward the author of the comic, but the contrast in authenticity and effectiveness is *wild*
one of these can be talked about in polite society and is (through no fault of the author) a fuzzy anachronism that's mainly talked about because the topic is in that zine/Sundance drama sweetspot where if you hit the right subculturally respectable presentation it takes off
@eggs_gremlin the first contact stuff is laughably unscientific and loosey goosey, which would be fine in a different story, but paints a pretty specific picture in one that's about a Smart Guy Saving The World In A Science Situation
@eggs_gremlin there's an undercurrent of yearning for the social world to be as simple as it was when you were an adolescent paired with explicit, undeniable recognition of being a Very Smart Boy (one of the first things gosling's character says is 'am i smart???', which he textually is)
@eggs_gremlin it's got the general tone and emotional complexity of a makoto shinkai movie, but the protagonist (and target audience) is a 30 year old self-described Smart Guy who watched the discovery channel as a kid. it comes off as intensely About That Specifically, the martian doesn't
