The @NationalZoo released a detailed update on how $LinhMai is doing this morning.
The level of care, attention, and love going into this is inspiring.
We'll summarize things here:
- She's separated from the three adults by a "howdy barrier" due to some initial aggression from her mom and grandma (unforunately common in rescue/zoo elephants)
- Her mom, Nhi Linh, responds to her calls consistently but has been frustrated and showed some signs of aggression
- When that happens, Bozie - Linh Mai's aunt and an experienced mother - steps in and nudges Nhi Linh/shows her how to behave
- Another elephant who has been a "helpful auntie" in the past, Swarna, has also stepped in to help
- Last night, Swarna and $LinhMai were finally allowed to meet directly, and they walked/cuddled while Linh Mai drank her morning bottle
- The staff trained Nhi Linh to provide milk prior to the birth, and this is going well it seems
- $LinhMai gets 1 bottle ever 2 hours (just like humans if you've had a baby)
- Weight gain has been somewhat slower than ideal, so they consulted with national experts and are doing a fecal microbiota transplant - to help digestive health
We helped raise almost $58,000 to name Linh Mai. She's been very protected by the zoo as she bonds with her new family and gets through her newborn phase.
She's going to be loved by the Zoo and DC when she makes her debut.
๐๐ This is your Thursday morning wake up call, courtesy of Linh Mai. Our little elephant calf's got a mighty trumpet, which echoed through the Elephant Community Center as she excitedly explored with "auntie" Swarna. โ๏ธSTORY: https://t.co/Bpe4RmJw4c.
Linh Maiโs first weeks have been tenuous, leading to less media updates than weโd expect. However, we hear sheโs doing well and weโll be seeing more of her soon.
The nationโs capital is obsessed with her, and we suspect everyone else will be as well.

We've anxiously been awaiting Linh Mai's next update as she gets ready for her public debut soon.
My son was worried about how she's doing and if she "gets enough to eat," so we made this.
@NationalZoo you have a star on your hands...

man....these living conditions are horrible
This zoo (Wildlife World Zoo) has had multiple accounts of animal abuse - just google it
in an ideal world, animals in captivity wouldn't be a thing, but seeing shit like this makes you appreciate the level of care and attention being given to Linh Mai
baby wild animals shouldnโt be allowed โencountersโ with tourists and need privacy to bond w their mothers
the Smithsonian @NationalZoo is a decent place that actually cares and contributes to conservation
$LinhMai has a team of like 20+ people around her, several acres to explore, and wonโt be introduced to the general public until Spring
Alright my sons are now doing $LinhMai poses before bed.
I think we are on to something.
I wonder if the @NationalZoo has any idea what Linh has already inspired.
The Smithsonianโs National Zoo says its newest arrival, a female Asian elephant born earlier this month, now officially has a name.
Zoo officials say the calf, Linh Mai, was born Feb. 2, becoming the first elephant born at the zoo in nearly 25 years. Her name, chosen through a public vote, means "spirit blossom" in Vietnamese.
