In 2009, I was a young medical student at Ahmadu Bello University, full of energy and conviction. That year, I served as an executive member of the ABU Medical Students Association (ABUMSA). We were planning our Annual General Meeting which was a major event and for us, it was more than just speeches and dinner. It was our way of gathering the best of our community, students, alumni, teachers and sometimes the very people who inspired us to believe medicine could be noble work in a country that didn’t always reward nobility.

We had two big goals that year: Host the AGM and launch our association’s magazine. But as was often the case, our dreams were bigger than our funds. So, like generations of medical students before us, we turned to our alumni. We drafted letters, made phone calls and eventually decided that the only way to make real progress was to go to Abuja ourselves. As was customary, we needed funds. We had our dreams neatly packed into brown envelopes, appeal letters, proposals and a long list of alumni we believed still remembered their roots. We told ourselves that if we worked hard enough, if we knocked on the right doors, help would come.

Four of us made that trip. The then president of the association, the campaign coordinator of the student union ,another colleague and myself. Young, ambitious and broke but we pooled what little we had and boarded a bus to the capital determined to make our case face to face.

At that time, ABUMSA had found new life under Dr. Ibrahim Tasiu’s leadership. He was vibrant, articulate and determined to restore the association’s pride. For the first time in a long while, medical students of ABU Zaria felt seen and united under a common purpose.

Our first stop was the office of the Minister of Health. We were received not by the minister himself but by his secretary, Dr. Kana ,a kind man who himself was a former NIMSA president. He listened to our pitch with the patience of someone who had once been in our shoes. He assured us that our appeal letter would reach the minister and promised to do everything he could to support our cause. His warmth gave us hope. From the moment we met him, he struck me as genuinely kind. It’s funny now thinking about how small we must have looked sitting across from him. Four scruffy medical students asking for help to print a magazine.

Our second stop was the office of the Director General of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate. At the time, his reputation preceded him. We had heard of his brilliance, his humility and his vision for public health in Nigeria. We waited for two hours while he attended to meetings. Eventually his secretary ushered us in. He received us warmly, asked about our studies and listened attentively as we explained our mission. After a brief conversation, he smiled and gave us his word that he would attend our event in Zaria. We were thrilled. We took him at his word and left for Zaria with our hearts light with hope.

True to his promise, Dr. Pate came. Not only did he attend the event, he donated ₦500,000, an unimaginable sum to us at the time. But it wasn’t the money that left a mark. It was the man himself. Dr. Pate was presented with an Award of Excellence by the Chairman of the occasion Professor M. S. Sambo of the Department of Community Medicine. Prof Sambo was another respected name whose presence gave the event even more weight.

After the event, a few of us gathered around him. He spoke to us like an older brother not a distant official. He asked about our studies, how we were coping in school and then told us something that has stayed with me all these years: “Work hard, graduate and do good. The world has so much to offer doctors who are willing to serve.”

-Choose Sweden 🇸🇪 if your budget is around 25M Naira (Your spouse MUST get a job from Sweden 🇸🇪 if you want to move together)

- Choose Mauritius🇲🇺 if your budget is not more than 5M Naira.

- Choose Benin republic 🇧🇯 IF........

@Sully_EFC @SinCityGooner @FabrizioRomano The logic basically is: if fifa/uefa transfer statutes can be breached albeit "legally", why can't the players take advantage of the loopholes in their own contracts as well? Moreso when you consider that such errant players have their heads turned by same clubs.

@Sully_EFC @SinCityGooner @FabrizioRomano This is why a lot of fans and less buoyant clubs are calling for the ffp to be worth it's weight in salt- cos at least it gives the clubs sth significant to think about and by extension makes the players more accountable for the megabucks they earn an the years they sign away.
