#rrhsaplit A5: The metaphor in the second stanza conveys that one’s destiny is not predetermined by what it was created to be. Each person is given a choice to be something more than what was planned for them by somebody else.
#rrhsaplit A4: The poem up until it starts using individual names takes on a dark and gloomy tone, but once the names are mentioned, it humanizes the people behind the “chain link fences” who are wearing the “dull gray” clothes and doesn’t allow them to be pushed into the shadows
#rrhsaplit A3: By this line, I think the poet is suggesting that when a plan is made to build something, it most always transforms into something unpredicted because stories and emotions are created behind and around the item initially built.
#rrhsaplit A2: The image most prevalent to me after first reading this poem is a group of men inside prison walls, wondering what life is like “beyond this place.”
#rrhsaplit A1: The title of this poem sets up the idea that there is always more beyond whatever is set up in front of you. Whether that be a story or another place or something entirely different, there is always more to a thing or place.
#rrhsaplit WU: My favorite poem is “How to Fight” because this poem conveys to the reader that learning how to use words as an advantage will never hinder a person, but will rather allow them to get further in their lives, and I think that this is an important lesson to learn.
