They do game metrics, but we live in a society in which certain early-life metrics to a significant extent gate later-life outcomes. As gauche as it seems, it is negligent for parents to *not* "game metrics" when these metrics have been established as obstacles to their children's success. Families that fail to do so demonstrate either incapacity, ignorance, or disinterest in their children's life outcomes. There are many whites whose parents are studiously attentive to their life outcomes and whose parents game these metrics with verve, but mainstream white-American culture tends to see this as a bit controlling and contemptuous of individual autonomy and self-fashioning (& it poses a disciplinary challenge for parents both vis-a-vis their children and vis-a-vis themselves that is difficult to win if they, themselves, were brought up in a low-discipline environment), and consequently many parents are more lackadaisical towards these matters than their Asian / Indian counterparts would be. But — if they do, in fact, value these outcomes as highly — this is a failure! So it's difficult to avoid the conclusion that white parents are either inept with respect to existing conditions, or that they simply don't care enough to optimize for the relevant life outcomes.
Perhaps one thinks that whites have had the socioeconomic system they created snatched from them by the evolution of its standards away from their own norms. There's a good case to be made that this is true. But it's worth pointing out that the same people howling about Indian admissions extend precious little sympathy to blacks for their largely-indistinguishable complaints about the "game" — that is, cultural incongruence & unfairness with respect to American racial history — and ascribe their relative failure to some blend of inherent incapacity and unsympathetic cultural failure to adapt to reality.
Insofar as complaints about Indians reflect a simple sentiment that they shouldn't be here at all — well, fine. But it's ridiculously dishonest and two-faced (and I'm not suggesting you're doing this, by the way) to suggest that the issue is that Indians play the game unfairly hard. It's a game! Anyone can play hard!!
The race-science position now appears to be that test scores actually shouldn't be the deciding factor in college admissions and that high schoolers should be partying instead of trying to get As, a belief that mysteriously emerged as being racist against Indians became trendy.
Nobody has a decent answer to this. Christiano's glibness in response to «The benevolence of the butcher» was insufferable. If humans need not apply, how do they maintain enough leverage to not be disposed of?
Watching everyone freak out about the supposed plague or that cruise ship virus months ago just makes me realize everyone is deeply traumatized from Covid.
I like that the implication here is that making your children do things they don't want to do is a torture no sane parent could perform, and I really like that this does, in fact, appear to actually be mainstream white American culture now.
A lot of guys got so turned off by the admittedly-ludicrous epistemic abuses of American race discourse that they unfortunately lost control of their faculties and now believe anything that sounds sort of racist.
Getting angry at Codex for suboptimal SQL as part of a multi-thousand-line project banged out in ten minutes & then thinking about how much angrier I'd be if it had then disappeared in the middle of the workday & feeling gratitude to my managers for not shooting me in the face.
uh, you don’t get it.
you can make bank with AI, but you need to go through the whole rigamarole of building something people would buy.
if all you can do is “being real good at rayp”, as a famous data scientist once described mr wentsworth, you won’t get 1.4 mil over 4 years for doing nothing at any of the major labs
bro us Americans we do things a little bit different. We love raw talent, we HATE grit, we respect natural ability, and non kinship ties are everything.
I don’t know what changes SAT made besides being easier, so I have no opinion on the merits of this theory, but what I do know is in the past Blacks and Hispanics were mocked and soundly dismissed by people like this for suggesting the SAT might be biased towards White people
