In honor of it being Death Stranding's 5th anniversary, here's my game review :))
Death Stranding Game Review: 9.5/10
In short, Death Stranding is about a porter/delivery man who brings the country together through an internet-like network. It feels wrong to describe the game in only that way, though. The game has a complex story filled with twists, character growth, and amazing artistry.
You play as Sam Porter Bridges, a generally closed-off and pessimistic man in a broken America. He didn't care about the country or the future. But, as he progresses and makes connections with others, his views change.
In a world filled with so much hate (especially online), Death Stranding brings in a breath of fresh air.
With only being able to upvote posts and structures, the game forces you to think positively. You begin to look for ways to not only help yourself but to help others too.
Like the ladders and bridges left by others to help you cross rivers, the generator in the middle of nowhere allowing you to charge your vehicle, etc.
I found myself looking at the map differently. If I'm driving my vehicle around a certain area and get low on battery, I'm sure others are too. I began looking for better places to leave things, hoping it would help them.
And when you go back to structures you've built and see the likes left by players, it gives you a sense of appreciation and accomplishment.
The scenery is stunning. The whole game is truly a beautiful landscape. The photo mode was really fun to play around with. The different poses for both Sam and BB added some fun little moments.
Death Stranding also has the best soundtrack I've ever heard in a video game. I couldn't wait until the next song would start playing. It truly draws you in and sets the tone. When "Don't Be So Serious" started playing in the beginning, that was when I knew I was going to love this game. I found myself connecting these songs to the moments in the game. I can't think of one thing without the other. It had that much of an impact.
Though you might be doing a tedious delivery, it never felt like a chore to me. There were many times when I wished I was farther away from my objective so I could take in the scenery and music more.
In terms of gameplay, Death Stranding had a great balance between action/story and downtime/delivery. You could generally do as much or as little as you wanted.
The combat was enjoyable. Drop-kicking mules and throwing their own cargo back at them was fun. The action sections with Cliff were some of the coolest parts of the game. The gunplay wasn't as fluid or "easy" as some other third-person shooters I've played, but it didn't bother me much.
As for the story, it's very complex. It only starts making a lot of sense towards the end of the game when you piece things together. But it makes for an emotional "holy shit" moment. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but believe me when I say the confusion and journey are worth it in the end.
There are some small things about the game I wasn't a huge fan of. As I mentioned, the gunplay was a bit trickier. I also think all the repetitive screens and holograms before/after deliveries could be a bit annoying at times. I also wished I could've played in-game music myself during deliveries but I understand why they didn't do that.
But I truly feel like they're such minimal things compared to how much I enjoyed the game.
The game isn't for everyone, that much is clear. But when given a true shot, I think many people can see it for what it is. It's more than a walking simulator, as I've heard it be called so many times.
It's about coming together and having hope, even when things seem futile.
It truly was an emotional game for me and a work of art. I can't wait to see what Death Stranding 2 holds for us.

Also a few more random thoughts:
- FRAGILE I LOVE YOU BB
- The easter eggs were amazing, especially all the of Cyberpunk ones. I liked that a lot of the easter eggs gave you items that were actually helpful, like the gravity gloves.
