When armed gangs can seize a major highway in broad daylight, extort motorists at gunpoint and disappear without consequence, the State is not merely failing; it is surrendering territory to criminals.

A public highway has effectively become a criminal toll station. Ordinary Kenyans are forced to negotiate with goons for the privilege of travelling on roads they already paid for through taxes.

Where is the Interior CS? Where are the police commanders? Where is the much-advertised intelligence apparatus? If the government can track political critics, deploy police to demonstrations and monitor citizens online, it should certainly be capable of stopping armed gangs from taking over highways.

This is not a public-relations problem. It is a failure of command.

The Interior CS and senior police leadership should resign. You cannot preside over the deterioration of public security, offer excuses after every incident and still pretend to be in control.

Let us be honest about where this is heading. A generation denied jobs, dignity and opportunity is increasingly vulnerable to criminal recruitment. When the legitimate economy shuts its doors, organised crime starts opening them.

A government that cannot guarantee a citizen safe passage on a public highway has forfeited the right to lecture Kenyans about security.

Kenya cannot normalise a country where criminals control the roads while the State controls press conferences.

Enough excuses. Enough impunity. Someone must take responsibility.

Over the weekend Farouk Kibet and several blood-based MPs landed 6 helicopters in Bonchari Constituency in Kisii County to empower women.

They donated 1 sanitary pad worth 80 bob, plastic basins worth 150 Bob and a young cloth written not for sale!

Those who wouldn't fit in the oversize young clothes were substituted with 1 bar of soap.
