Finally took some time to install the new K4 Boost Comfort Battery Head strap and the ever-so-needed Performance Controller Grips from @KIWIdesign_shop on my #Quest3.
I had their older models of both battery head straps and their comfort grips already and they absolutely have been a godsend for comfort and extending playtime in VR so I am incredibly excited to put their newest releases to the test.
Already, I can see some great, little improvements on the head strap. The cable clip is much better designed and already set, as the previous release had a clip you had to manually install. The new version has the plug cable for the battery at the perfect length so you don't have to worry about any extra cable getting in the way and how to manage it.
The battery is rated to be 5300 mah which is slightly less than the previous model, but the Boost in the name represent how much faster you can charge this thing. I have to do some tests after some full play sessions, but they state that a 60 minute charge with their 45w adapter can net you an 2.5 hours of extra playtime, whereas a 90 minute charge can add an additional hour to the total (3.5 hours!), which actually sounds unbelievable for the time it takes.
The technology they have implemented for their fast-charge capability is a 4-layer, 4-sided 3d main board that holds two battery cells in series, and 10 chips offer simultaneous charging. The batteries themselves are stated to be high energy dense lithium cobalt oxide and offer a stable output of 3.85v for maximum efficiency.
The memory foam placed around the top of the head, back and on your face seems to be on par with what they already had included with their previous model, with the exception of the surface area increase for the back. I've always found their foam to be super comfortable, durable and very stable in terms of seating while moving so you don't have any shifting or sliding while you're flailing around like a madman. The velcro strap allows for a quick and painless fit adjustment along with the easy-twist dial found on the back. Putting the headset on becomes a breeze.
The comfort grips are something that I am actually very excited about because they have designed ones that you don't have to slip off ever again in order to change a dead battery. The door flap is designed right in. My main concern about a design like this was that it would flip open at the worst time or that they would not stay closed securely, but they really have done an incredible job of making really comfortable grips that allow this function. During use, you can't even feel the "door" areas and this is a game changer for those that hated peeling off and slipping on grips just to replace a battery. Bravo Kiwi!
I'll be posting more thoughts on the future after getting some decent hours into this setup, and I would like to thank @KIWIdesign_shop (who I've always dubbed the "🍎" of VR accessories) once again for sending these new toys over. You make the VR experience so much better for so many. 🍻
