The Bhutanese believe mindful presence rises on the wings of Buddhist tradition and transcends earth-bound states of being. In Buddhism transcendence is a trance-like condition or state of being that exceeds physical existence and in one form is also free of it.

I found joy in that the scene was unique, but the image made is not exploitive. It is purity in its most expansive form: clear, cleansed, communal, fluid, and offering release from weightedness. Perhaps that is enough. Perhaps that is everything.

I visited several monasteries and nunneries during a past trip to Mandalay. On this particular day, I had followed several women in the complex around a corner and came upon these nuns bathing. It was mostly quiet, this communal act of washing.

The blue monotone azure of Zanzibar, indecipherable between land and sky, has forever lured adventurous voyagers to its faraway shores. The ingredients for the exotic and magical is successfully brewed on this island off the coast of Eastern Tanzania.⁠

During the 19th century, the African floating world was run and owned by the powerful Omani Arabs, whose Sultan dominated the largest slave trade in East Africa and the greatest spice trade in the world.⁠ Known as the “Spice Island,” Zanzibar is idyllic and inspiring.

The foreheads touching in this image create an intimate, respectful expression of connectivity. It’s as if the highest sense of self that is contained in the crown of the head is in this moment, one mind “touching” another mind in an immense, but simple, loving, trusting gesture.

Hungarians are great believers in the medicinal powers of thermal bathing. There are over 100 thermal bathhouses boasting some of the world’s finest Ottoman architecture and consisting of wonderful octagonal pools, cupolas and colored glass windows.

Prior to my leaving I asked if I could make his portrait. He invited me up to the roof where I made this photograph. The old Blue City is more lovely for this fine gentleman and others like him who take such pride in their city.

The magnificent blue city of Jodhpur is a maze of delightful alleyways and old dilapidated homes. Each day I would pass this gentleman, the guardian of this building.

They also weave and tan sheep and yak skins used to make garments to protect them from the fierce Himalayan winters.

The Drokpas, or nomads, of Tibet are a visible presence in this province bordering the Himalayas of India. They travel in groups of families; the men tend to the yaks in the grasslands while women make butter and cheese.
