Amnesty International strongly condemns the reckless attack on peaceful protesters today during a Democracy Day protest at Unity Fountain in Abuja in which human rights activist Omoyele Sowore collapsed and was subsequently taken to a hospital. The deliberate targeting of Sowore must be investigated. Such targeting of activists solely for exercising freedom of assembly is unlawful and shows utter disregard for the rule of law.

The Nigerian authorities are clearly using violence to crackdown on human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. 

President Tinubu’s government has failed to demonstrate commitment to upholding the country’s constitution and its international human rights obligations that allow people to freely exercise their human rights including the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

Testimonies from survivors detained at Tiger Base Owerri Imo state reveal a disturbing pattern in which children arrested alongside their mothers are taken away by police officers and never brought back.

Amnesty International's findings show that these children are not simply separated but effectively disappeared — removed without any record, concealed from relatives, and never returned.

The absence of documentation, officers' refusal to provide information, and the deliberate obstruction of mothers seeking their children all point to a systematic practice that amounts to enforced disappearance. #Nigeria #Owerri

Tiger Base of Atrocities in Owerri: The testimonies from survivors of Tiger Base detention reveal a consistent pattern of torture, degrading treatment, and sexual abuse.
