My statement:Ā
āToday, the U.S. Supreme Court stood up for the rule of law and Americans everywhere. Its message was simple: Presidents are powerful, but our Constitution is more powerful still. In America, only Congress can impose taxes on the American people. Ā
The US Supreme Court gave us everything we asked for in our legal case. Everything.
IāmĀ grateful for the leadership of the Liberty Justice Center, andĀ in particular forĀ the brilliant advocacy by its chair,Ā SaraĀ Albrecht, who led the fight when othersĀ wouldnātĀ and was dauntless in its defense of our constitutionalĀ order.Ā I'mĀ alsoĀ grateful to the five small business owners who stood up against these unjust, unconstitutional taxes. By taking a stand, they have delivered crucial relief to tens of thousands of businesses and millions of consumers across the country. Ā
Finally,Ā IĀ lack the words to properly thank my brilliant Milbank team, especiallyĀ ColleenĀ RohĀ SinzdakĀ andĀ SamiĀ Ilagan, who worked with me day and night for many months to craft the winning argument.Ā Ā
This case has always been about the presidency, not any one president. It has always been about separation of powers, and not the politics of the moment.Ā I'mĀ gratified to see our Supreme Court, which has been the bedrock of our government for 250 years, protect our most fundamental values.
Do you have a passport? Do you know where your birth certificate is?
If the answer to both is no, then you cannot vote under the SAVE Act.
The SAVE Act is NOT a voter ID bill. Itās a voter suppression bill.
The Kennedy Center has been in continuous operation for 55 years.
Trump and Ric Grenell destroyed it in one year by making it so toxic that nobody will perform there.
Now they have to shut it down like a Trump casino.
Adding your name to a memorial already named in honor of a great man doesnāt make you a great man. Quite the contrary. Putting your name on top of someone elseās doesnāt mean that people will speak of you in the same breath as the other man. Putting your name above another manās name on his existing memorial⦠What is that about? Truly? Whatās that about? Do you want people to speak the names as one? Dig down deep. What are you trying to say? Iām really interested. There is no other president who would do this. None. Zero. In fact, itās not even legal. Congress named the performing arts center as a living memorial in 1964, and only congress can change that law.
This will always be the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Art. A great man would have said to his hand picked board, āThank you, but the building already has its name. Let it stand. Let it be. I donāt need that.ā But then againā¦
We canāt lose focus on what matters ā right now, Republicans in Texas are trying to gerrymander district lines to unfairly win five seats in next yearās midterm elections. This is a power grab that undermines our democracy.
1/On July 21, the Washington Post ran a piece headlined, āTrump officials accused of defying 1 in 3 judges who ruled against him.ā There are real reasons for the courts to be concerned about the Trump administration gearing up to actively flout the authority of the Article III branch of government.
ICYMI, it was @MarilynRMarks1 who discovered the voting system breach in Coffee County, GA. Not the GA Secretary of State. Not Fani Willis. It was Marilyn. 1/
.@VP shld request manual recounts (& ballot images) bc Rs blocked legislation that wld have required robust manual audits for federal races, MAGAs breached voting systems in swing states, & bomb threats forced evacuations of election offices. But if u are spreading half-baked calculations & other nonsense, u are undermining our ability to persuade @VP to request recounts. 1/
